leftovers of the cake party - ylijäämät kakkukekkerit pajasta

There were some leftovers from the cake-themed bookbinding workshop: the decorative spines of old books, as well as a few bookbinding sets.

We made pretty bookmarks out of the spines (as seen in Erica Ekrem's book Bound).

I arranged further one-one-one bookbinding sessions at my workplace until the sets ran out.

Out of too-pretty-to-bin gilded scraps I made tiny books that became earrings and necklaces.

No good stuff should go to waste, as you know.

Kirjansidontapajasta jäi yli muutama materiaalipakkausta sekä vanhojen kirjojen kauniit nimiöt.

Työpaikallani ohjasin kirjansidontaa kunnes kaikki setit loppuivat.

Teimme sitten kirjojen nimiöistä kirjanmerkkejä (idea alkuperäisin Erica Ekremin kirjasta Bound).

Ihan pienistä kullattujen nimiöiden hukkapaloista tein minikokoisia kirjoja joista tuli korviksia ja kaulakoruja.

Hyviä materiaaleja ei laiteta roskikseen, tietty.

Its a piece of cake bookbinding workshop

My first group workshop ever - there was cake and everything.

Well, cake-inspired handbound books, more like.

I instructed 3 people who were new to bookbinding to make scrumptious upcycled books. 

I set up everything like an old fashioned party, with aged white bobbin lace, glass cake stands, lovely old baking tins and handfuls of candy-like beads and such. I did enjoy hunting for the props, just as much as designing the actual bookbinding part.

 

The cake-themed do was a success. I fretted over how many stabbed fingers I might have to apply plasters to - the awl is incredibly sharp and sneaky fast if one is not used to using it - but I had no reason to worry.

Everybody completed their book smiling (and probably quite hungry for actual cake) none with bleeding fingertips.

Next time I might forego such a literal theme though. People just about fit around the table sewing...

Ohjasin eka kertaa ryhmälle kirjansidontaa.

Teemoitin koko juttu kakkukekkeriksi, menin hieman intohimoiseksi rekvisiitan hankimisessa, mutta kirjansidontaohjeetkaan ei kärsineet - kirjoitin ne ihan reseptinä.

Kaikki pajalaiset oli kuitenkin hyvin otettuja ja innoissaan pajn ilmiöstä, ja valmistivat kakkusiivu-näköistä kirjojaan hyvässä ilmapiirissä, ilman tökättyjä sormenpäitä. (Olin vähän huolissani etukäteen, miten tulee sujumaan jos ei olla totuttuja käyttämään naskalia, muttei olisi tarvinnutkaan hermoilla.)

Seuraava kertaa ehkä en kattaa pöytiä niin juhlavasti kirjansidontaa varten - kiva oli, mutta olisihan ollut ehkä pikkasen enemmän työtilaa parempi...

a first stab at book repair - ensiaskeleet kirjojen korjauksessa

The title of this post could also be Figuring it out despite the fear of failure...

When I chose the course assignment about Repairing in the Arts and Crafts Industry, I was thinking I will repair a woolen garment, or a frayed upholstery with creative mending.

When it came down to it, I did a u-turn on textiles, and attempted to repair an old book.

The aim of the repair was to mend the structural issues without disturbing the original charm and features of the book. It was a first edition of a crafts and creative passtimes book aimed at children and their mothers, printed in 1919. It was missing its pattern inserts and the pouch they were held in (marks from it on the back inner cover). 

The book's overall value in good original condition, complete with the pattern inserts is about 15€, a low value despite its age and despite that it is a first edition. However, I wouldn't have considered going anywhere near a more valuable book, being a complete newbie in book repair.

I researched it as much as I could, and it turns out that books from this particular post-war era can be tricky to repair due to the low quality materials used. Still, I did my best to do the book justice.

I separated the signature block from the covers, and picked off the deteriorating bookcloth from the spine. The binding was fine, so I re-glued the spine to a new cotton strip (ripped from an old bedsheet) with bookbinder's glue, then reattached the book covers. I reinforced the new hinges both inner front and back with a strip of handmade artisan paper that had a similar structure to japanese tissue, as well as had a similar tone to the original old yellowed pages.

The paperclad covers received a protective sleeve I made of see-through vellum. I think I didn't do too badly with this repair, for a first ever.

Kun valitsin Korjaus taideteollisuusalalla kurssin, ajattelin korjata esimerkiksi villapuseron tai huonekalun verhoilun näkyvällä korjauksella. Kun aika tuli, menin ihan toiseen suuntaan ja valitsin korjattavaksi vanhan kirjan.

Tavoitteena oli korjata kirjan rakenteellisia vikoja muuttamatta kirjan alkuperäistä ilmettä tai yksityiskohtia. Korjattava kirja oli Äiti mitä minä tekisin? niminen, lapsille ja heidän äidilleen kirjoitettu käsityö- ja askartelupuuhakirja, vuodesta 1919. Kirjan arvo (hyväkuntoisena ja ehjänä, kaavaliitteet mukana) on korkeintaan 15€. Melko matala arvo niin vanhalle ensipainokselle, mutta täytyy myöntää etten olisi edes miettinyt tästä arvokkamman kirjan korjausta ensikertalaisena.

Tutkin asiaa ja päätin tehdä kaikkeni sen eteen, että matalalaatuisesta materiaaleista valmistettu ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeinen teos saisi kuntolleen parhaan mahdollisen ratkaisun.

Viilsin kirjablokin varovaisesti irti kansisalkusta ja poistin hapertuneen sidosharson tarkistaen, että nidokset olivat ehjät. Sen jälkeen liimasin kirjan selkää uudelle taivekangas-suikaleelle, joka oli revitty pehmeäksi pestystä vanhasta puuvillalakanasta. Sitten liimasin kirjablokin takaisin kansisalkuunsa ja vaihvistin sisätaipeiden liitokset vanhan paperin sävyisellä artesaanipaperilla.

Paperipäällysteiset kannet, jossa näkyy yli sadan vuoden käytön jälkiä, sekä suloinen Jugend-ajan kuvapainatus, saivat suojapaperoinnin: valitsin tähän läpikuultavaa velliiniä.

Luulen, että suoriuduin kirjankorjaushaasteesta melko ookoosti, vaikka olen edelleenkin ihan newbie siinä.

sashiko-stitched knitting needle case - sashikoitu puikkokotelo

I started to try out sashiko-inspired free-style handstitching a whole year ago with a pile of supercolourful fabric scraps and some linen thread. It became one of those stuck in the process wip's that just had to be rethunk to be finished.

So instead a cushion cover, it ended up becoming a knitting needle case.

Vuotta sitten aloitin kokeilemaan sashiko-kirjontaa mutta projekti jäi kesken. Otin esille taas, ja mietin mitä muuta voisi keksiä ylikirjavasta mutta kivasta, monta tuntia käsin tikatusta tekstiilistäni.

Näin tuli hauska sukkapuikko-kotelo keskeneräisestä sashikoidusta tyynynpällisestä.

another learning curve in tutoring - seuraava oppikaarini ohjaajana

This was the second of the two practice teaching sessions, that I organised before my main creative bookbinding workshop exam.

I wrote the instructions, and then decided to make my own book alongside the person I was teaching, to see how others pace differs from mine, as well as how well I can write instructables.

As a result, we ended up with two very cute journals, and I learned a lot again about how to teach my creative skills to others.

Harjoitustuokiona näyttöäni varten vedin taas luovaa kirjansidontaa, yhdelle asiakkalle vain tässäkin kertaa. Tein oman kirjani kirjoitettujen ohjeeni seuraen, samanaikaisesti asiakkaan kanssa rinnakkain - halusin kokea miten muiden tahti eroa omaltani, sekä osaanko selkeästi selittä ohjeissa mitä ja miten tehdään.

Lopputuloksena syntyi kaksi todella söpö päiväkirja. Olen myös oppinut paljon taas muille ohjauksesta.

When I need to find the answers, assembling a collage helps to connect the dots between my way of feeling-thinking in forms and images, and being able to express the same verbally.

The images below show one of my glue-in journals that I collage in for inspiration and for mental health, and a funny random collage that gave me an idea for a potential art therapy course.

I organised two teaching occasions, so I could practice instructing the creative bookbinding before my big exam.

During the first occasion, this little book was created, mainly from the ideas of the person I was teaching.

Järjestin kaksi erillistä ohjaustuokiota, jotta voisin harjoitella kirjansidonnan ohjausta näyttöni varten.

Ensimmäisen pajan aikana syntyi tämä pieni kirjanen asiakkaan ideoiden johdosta.

I had a blast upcycling bits of knitted woollen samples, halfway knitting projects and wrongly washed jumpers into this one big hug of a cardigan.

Before I went to attend the day course in Tampere, I collected inspiration and all the materials weeks in advance. The scrap store and the charity shops really spoiled me this time - I loved the potential and the promise of my collected scarpheap.

For the day of the course, the overlocker became my best friend. Together we made the most colourful, most oversized upcycled knitwear I ever did see.

I have already started to collect woolly bits again, in the hope that I could make another pieced garment soon.

I wear this sometimes - it's really warm! I'm not a 100% certain about how the collar turned out - I'm thinking about re-doing it.

Mulla oli niin hauskaa tuunaamassa neulemallitilkkuja, keskeneräisiä neuleprojekteja sekä väärinpestyjä villapuseroita uudeksi vaatekappaleeksi!

Olin kerännyt kaikki inspiraatiotani sekä kaikki materiaalit viikoja ennen kun lähdin Tampereen suuntaan lähiopetuspäivänä. Porin tekstiili- ja materiaalipankista sekä muilta kierrätyspaikkoista löytyi loistavasti soveltuvaa tekstiiliä ja lisukkeita. Olin ihan innoissani kerätyssä tekstiilipinossa piilevistä mahdollisuuksista.

Lähipäviän aikana opiston saumurin kanssa tulimme hyvin toimeen - yhdessä me saimme aikaiseksi maailman överi-ilosimman, yliylisuurimman, kirjavimman villatakin E-V-E-R.

Olen jo keräämässä uutta villaneulepalasia, joista saisi taas värkätty uuden palaneulevaatteen.

Laitan tämä mun eka tuunattu villatakkini päälle kun on tarpeeksi viileä - se on yllättävän lämmin! En kuitenkaan olen vakuuttunut sen kauluksen viimeistelystä, luulen että puren ja korjaan sen paremmaksi joskus.

improvised mending - sashikoidut joulufarkut

Last week my son needed a xmas outfit for the pre-xmas school disco.

There was a pair of red ripped jeans waiting in the wardrobe, we bought it together in the summer when he got inspired by all the ripped jeans I was altering for my textile art project.

The red jeans fit him well, but it's winter here so I quickly applied some sashiko-inspired mending to it. I had a couple of evenings to get it done. His request was that I use only red fabric for patching, and only red, green and white mending thread.

One of the holes looked like the pointy capped head of a bearded xmas elf, so I followed that idea. If I had more time, I would have stitched a xmas tree shape onto the other knee. 

I'd love to find more ripped denim for mending and wearing! I'm also curious, how the red pair will wash - will we end up with white thread tinted pink?

Viime viikolla poikani tarvitsi jouluisen asun koulun tonttudiskoon. 

Vaatehuoneessa odottivat punaiset revityt farkut. Ostimme ne yhdessä kesällä, kun hän inspiroitui mun sashikoilusta tekstiilitaideteostani varten. 

Punaiset farkut olivat sopivat, paitsi nyt on pakkasta ja lunta, joten oli pakko paikata reiät umpeen. Aika oli siihen pari iltaa verran, niin otin korjausneula esiin heti. 

Pojan pyynnöstä käytin paikkaamiseen pelkästään punaista kangasta ja vain punaista, vihreää ja valkoista korjauslankaa. Yksi rei'istä näytti ihan tontulta, en vastustanut ajatusta, lisäsin parrankin.

Jos olisi ollut enemmän aikaa, olisin fiksannut joulukuusen muodon toiselle polvelle. 

Tykkäisin löytää lisää revittyä denimiä korjausta ja pukemista varten, vaikka kaupunkikuorihousuiksi merinoleggareitani päälle. Saa nähdä, miten punainen pari selviytyy pesusta - värjäytyykö tai ei kaikki valkoiset ompeleet pinkiksi?
