new life for a VHS tape's slipcase - VHS kasettikotelon uusi elämä

VHS tapes are toxic, but the cardboard cases could have a new life. As a journal, for example.

I arranged a bookbinding workshop at work to fulfill one of my course assignments. We reused the slipcovers of VHS tapes as book covers.

There were old comics from the same era to upcycle into decorative pages and to add interesting detail inside the journals.

The workshop was a success, it was nice to see people enjoying crafting something nice, useful and usable from nostalgic trash.

I filmed a video during the coffee break - the still life of everybody's work in progress was so inspiring!  View the reel on my Instagram account.

the allotment as lifestyle - palstaviljely lifestyle:na

I made a mini-collection based on the lifestyle of an allotment gardener. Which I am one myself too.

I was making this collection during the heart of winter, so it was extra nice to work with such summery themes and of course I pulled out all my floral scraps and made sure the frozen January landscapes of my greyscale urban surroundings didn't have a say in how my collection would look like.

I designed a 5-piece collection, of which I succesfully realized a summer hat, a gardening journal and a gardener's tool belt / apron. I would have liked to make a bag that goes on the bike, but that proved to be a bigger job and a longer process that my schedule allowed for, and I tried to make gardening gloves but they didn't work out.

I cant wait for the growing season to start so I could model my collection - I reckon the swing-around apron will be a really useful accessory.

service design - palvelumuotoilu

What happens when you start looking at a non-profit organisation and the customer-facing services it provides, from the customers' point of view?

Well, firstly, you might end up knowing your customers and what drives them a bit better. You might even be able to choose a face for them. Or four.

You might start playing pretend with a stack of banana boxes and a little doll with a wooden pickup truck to simulate the real situation and to find a solution.

You might take the logo and run away with it. But first you think of the most obvious promotional product.

You could find yourself designing logo socks and knitting them up, to represent the main craft workshop run by the organisation.

You might start messing about with clay, and end up with chunky ceramic logo necklaces to represent the pottery.

Anothers might catch the same logoing bug, and you might end up having the same idea as the other to make upcycled bedsheet bags with silkscreened, swirling logos to be used in the pop-up shop.

Somebody else might look at the necklaces you made and fancies lightweight logo-shaped earrings. So you go down to the wood workshop and ask them to make a pair. While you are there you ask them to make a whole bunch more of the most obvious promotional product. It could get popular..!

And finally, you might decide to design a visual aid to explain to the unknowing or partially informed customer the whole complicated structure of the non-profit organisation and its different facets in a visual, easily absorbable format.

And this way, you might wind up having assembled a lovely little scene that greets the customer when they come here in their real pick-up truck. Thank you service design for the fresh point of view!

mending a paperback - liimaselkäisen pokkari-kirjan korjaus

I spent quite a few weeks on this mending project. It took me through a super interesting process of repairing a valuable paperback, and despite my constant worry that I won't do it right, I really surprised myself with the end result.

(For the start-out stage, the damaged condition, please scroll down to see the pictures further below.)

I repaired the actual book by taking it apart page by page, scrubbing off the brittle gummy old glue, then sanding the spine as a block to as smooth and level as was possible, then re-gluing it with the magical bookbinding glue and japanese tissue paper combo. I reinforced the covers from the inside but I left their original condition visible, as was requested.

Then I made the book a slipcase and insert combination so it would be nicely protected in its repaired condition. The owner hoped for a gilded spine and title which I tried out in samples but couldn't carry out to the appropriate effect, so I added some small golden details elsewhere.

The state of the book originally:

prepping for a big book mend - harjoitustyö kirjan korjausta varten

I felt I needed practice before I got down to repairing the book in actual need - a paperback that has value, as well as emotional value to its owner.

I rented books on the subject from the library to gain a more thorough understanding. I watched a really good tutorial on repairing paperbacks. Then I went to my allotment to get a couple of bricks, to make a simple book press out of them.

Next, I hunted for the perfect practice specimen. This took me a few weeks, but finally I found a similarly bound paperback, from the same era, and oddly with the same issue of damage caused by the same inherent vice of the same binding method, as far as I can tell.

I bought the recommended bookbinding glue and the japanese tissue paper as well (as seen in video).

I reckon they are key to the success of rebinding a glue-back paperback. The glue dries sortof flexible  so the spine doesn't break, and holds onto each page by that fraction of a millimetre of each paper edge with a remarkable fastness. The japanese tissue also provides a fast yet flexible bond (due to its fibre structure, I guess).

I was really nervous about how the repair will turn out, but now that I've gone through the process and gained a bit of understanding on how it works, I find myself pretty fascinated by it.

I feel equipped enough to start working on the paperback that is held dear by its owner.

(Muuten, korjattu harjoituskappale meni takaisin kirjaston vaihtohyllylle odottamaan lukijansa.)

leftovers of the cake party - ylijäämät kakkukekkerit pajasta

There were some leftovers from the cake-themed bookbinding workshop: the decorative spines of old books, as well as a few bookbinding sets.

We made pretty bookmarks out of the spines (as seen in Erica Ekrem's book Bound).

I arranged further one-one-one bookbinding sessions at my workplace until the sets ran out.

Out of too-pretty-to-bin gilded scraps I made tiny books that became earrings and necklaces.

No good stuff should go to waste, as you know.

Kirjansidontapajasta jäi yli muutama materiaalipakkausta sekä vanhojen kirjojen kauniit nimiöt.

Työpaikallani ohjasin kirjansidontaa kunnes kaikki setit loppuivat.

Teimme sitten kirjojen nimiöistä kirjanmerkkejä (idea alkuperäisin Erica Ekremin kirjasta Bound).

Ihan pienistä kullattujen nimiöiden hukkapaloista tein minikokoisia kirjoja joista tuli korviksia ja kaulakoruja.

Hyviä materiaaleja ei laiteta roskikseen, tietty.
