forest floor cushions - metsäpohja tyynysetti

Ever since I made the pieces for my Decay Garden, the process has been bubbling away in the back of my mind.

I'm glad I could combine this ongoing artistic process with one of my course assignments. It resulted in a set of cushions, but they are so much more to me than just decorative cushions.

I've pretty much ended up with exactly what I had in mind. The materials came together for it nicely too, partly because I had been collecting for the potential Decay Garden extension, as well as constant luck at the scrap store. I picked up textural fabrics that brings the forest floor to mind, also anything linen.

 

In these pieces I combined my pattern cutting and machine sewing skills with my obsession and love of stitching by hand. I dreamed of textural play in each of the pieces, and I feel I achieved the optimum in both, by two different approaches to fabric manipulation.

Minun Lahopuutarha sai lisäystä.

 

Olen ollut päässäni työstämässä monia Lahopuutarha-prosessiini liittyviä konseptejä. Opintojani kautta tuli nyt tilaisuus toteuttaa pari ideoistani ompelukurssin näytön muodossa. 

 

Suunniittelin Metsäpohja-nimisen tyynysetin. Olen tyytväinen siihen miten paperille heitetystä luonnoksesta sain molemmista ihan arkikäytössäkin toimivia tekstiiliteoksia. Kaikki elementit kuten kankaat ja yksityiskohtien ratkaisut tulivat vastaan vähän kuin tilauksesta - ja se on iso juttu kun meikäläinen metsästää teoksen ainekset aina kierrätettynä. No, olenhan minä keräillyt jo just tälläiset metsämaiset materiaalit, mutta kuitenkin, tekstiilipankki oli nykyään todella antelias ja tarjosi just mitä menin sinne etsimään (esim. toimivanväriset terenauhat, monta metriä edes!).

Hain erityisesti pellavaa, sekä sellaiset kankaat mitkä muistuttaa metsää, lehtoa ja kangasta.

Hyödynsin kaavojen piirto- ja ompelutaitoijani sekä innostukseni käsin ompeluun sai vallan tekstuurien muotoilussa myös. Halusin molemmissa tyynyssä luoda tekstuurien kautta metsien tuntumaa, ja luulen että sain aikaseksi just sellaisen valitsemillani tekstiilimuokkaus-tekniikkoilla.

the allotment as lifestyle - palstaviljely lifestyle:na

I made a mini-collection based on the lifestyle of an allotment gardener. Which I am one myself too.

I was making this collection during the heart of winter, so it was extra nice to work with such summery themes and of course I pulled out all my floral scraps and made sure the frozen January landscapes of my greyscale urban surroundings didn't have a say in how my collection would look like.

I designed a 5-piece collection, of which I succesfully realized a summer hat, a gardening journal and a gardener's tool belt / apron. I would have liked to make a bag that goes on the bike, but that proved to be a bigger job and a longer process that my schedule allowed for, and I tried to make gardening gloves but they didn't work out.

I cant wait for the growing season to start so I could model my collection - I reckon the swing-around apron will be a really useful accessory.

Suunnittelin ja valmistin malliston, inspiraationa oli palstaviljelijän lifestyle. Olen itse palstaviljelijä kesäisin, niin tuntui hyvältä täyttää syvätalven arkkipäiviäni kukkakuoseilla palstapuuhista pohdiskellen.

Mallisto koostuu asusteista ja tarvikkeista, toteutin niistä nämä kolme: hellehattu, puutarhurin työkaluvyö ja puutarhapäiväkirja. Polkupyörän sivulaukut olivat liian haasteelliset toteuttaa näytön aikataulun sisällä. Työhanskat yritin kyllä valmistaa, mutta ne eivät onnistuneet.

Olisi jo puutarhakausi alkannut! Haluan jo testata miten mallistoni käytännössä toimii, erityisesti mun suosikki: tuo puutarhaessu-työkaluvyö. Nähdään palstalla!

Decay Garden - eli minun Lahopuutarha

These pieces - Decaying log, Dead tree and Umbilical cord - rose out of feelings relative to human activity in and as part of nature. Nature is perfect in its creations and resolves, it becomes obvious that there is always inbuilt mechanisms, as well as natural circumstantial dynamics to ensure that when the original function ends usefulness still continues.

A tree for example. A tree dies standing in the ground, or falling to the forest floor, it instantly and seamlessly becomes just another part of the forest, by providing a new habitat or source of food. It is still a vital part of the cycle of the living forest, not a problem, not a surplus, nor a waste.

Take a pair of jeans. In general its functionality ends in a hole, a stain, a broken zipper, a new fashion trend. It is now considered dysfunctional, not needed, not wanted. I wondered if it is only down to point of view. If the point of view is shiftable. What makes a weed a weed, and what makes a pest a pest. In nature, they all seem to have their assigned places, no one is excluded. Everything is kept in balance with others but nothing is singled out as bad, or useless. 

With human activity and endeavours, it seems that we often generate waste and problems alongside whatever we make. We label things from our point of view, while considering our own desires and our own purpose, leaving little space in thought for our environment where we exist as part of it. We leave unobserved the needs of our needs that thed'd require to cycle back into nature in a non-problematic way..

Decay Garden with its current three pieces is an ongoing meditation amongst points of view, a wordless non-judgemental textile prayer, a deep-felt wish towards a wholesome change.  I wish that everything we produce would be just like a tree. I wish that everything we produce would belong to a perfect cycle of usefulness in all its stages of existing and then melting into the source without creating issues. 

 

Lahopuutarha - Lahopuu, Kelopuu ja Napanuora

Lahopuutarha nykyisellä kolmella osallaan on omien tunteiden hyväksyminen luontoa ja ihmisluonetta kohtaan, samalla jatkuvaa mietiskelyä näkökulmien kesken, sanaton, tuomitsematon tekstiilirukous ja syvällinen toive kohti terveellistä muutosta.

Luonto on täydellinen luomuksissaan ja ratkaisuissaan. Käy ilmi, että aina on sisäänrakennettuja mekanismeja sekä luonnollisten olosuhteiden dynamiikkaa varmistamaan hyödyllisyyden jatkua, kun alkuperäinen toiminto päättyy.

Esimerkiksi puu. Puu kuolee seisten tai kaatuu metsäpohjaan. Siitä tulee hetkessä ja saumattomasti vain toinen osa metsää tarjoamalla uuden elinympäristön tai ravinnon lähteen. Se on edelleen tärkeä osa elävän metsän kiertokulkua, ei ongelma, ei ylijäämä tai jäte.

Sitten farkut. Yleensä niiden toimivuus päättyy reikään, tahraan, rikkinäiseen vetoketjuun, uuteen muotitrendiin. Nitä pidetään nyt pois joutuvana, hävetettävänä, hävittettävänä.

Mietin, onko se vain näkökulmasta kiinni. Jos näkökulma olisi pehmeämpi, pyöreämpi, taipuisampi, mukautuvampi kuten materiaali on. Mikä tekee jätteestä jätteen, rikkaruohosta rikkaruohon, tuholaisesta tuholaisen. Luonnossa niillä kaikilla näyttää olevan omaa paikkansa, ketään tai mitään ei ole suljettu pois. Kaikki pidetään tasapainossa muiden kanssa, muttei mitään korosteta huonoksi taikka hyödyttömäksi.

Ihminen toiminnallaan ja pyrkimyksillään luo usein ongelmia kaiken tekemisen rinnalla. Merkitsee asioita omasta näkökulmastansa, ottaa huomioon omat toiveensa ja tarkoituksensa, jättäen liian vähän tilaa ajatuksissaan luonnolliselle ympäristöllensä, jossa elää vuorovaikutuksessa osana sitä. Jätämme huomiotta tarpeidemme tarpeet, joiden pitäisi olla jo paikallaan luomusvaiheesa että luomuksimme voi olla osaa luontoa ongelmattomalla tavalla.

Toivon, että kaikki meidän tuottamamme olisi kuin metsän puu. Toivon, että kaikki meidän tuottamamme koko olemassaolonsa aikana kuuluisi täydelliseen hyödyllisyyden kiertokulkuun ja sitten sulaisi takaisin luontoon luomatta ongelmia.

Continuity through ending. Tree dies on its “feet”. A tree falls to the forest floor. Meaning a beginning to two different types of new habitat that the living tree wasn’t yet, or was only the beginning of.

The interesting Y shape that is the woodpecker's tongue. It's not as simple as the Y shape, but nevertheless. I like how it ties in, and informs my woodpecker element further in this work.

This shape occurs in nature EVERYWHERE. In us, on many levels, in plants, in animals, in minerals, visible and microscopic.

Legs sprouting from a torso, fingers from a palm, branches from a tree trunk, twigs from a branch, antlers from a deer's skull, blood vessels, veins in a leaf, a nervous system, a root system, atoms organising into a chrystalline arrangement...is it a lung, is it a tree, is it a rock?
