 VHS tapes are toxic, but the cardboard cases could have a new life. As a journal, for example.

I arranged a bookbinding workshop at work to fulfill one of my course assignments. We reused the slipcovers of VHS tapes as book covers.

There were old comics from the same era to upcycle into decorative pages and to add interesting detail inside the journals.

The workshop was a success, it was nice to see people enjoying crafting something nice, useful and usable from nostalgic trash.

VHS kasetit ovat myrkyllisiä, mutta niiden kartonkisia koteloita voi uusiokäyttää ihan hyvässä mielessä. 

Järjestin työpaikallani kirjansidontapajan, jossa käytettiin VHS kasettien koteloita kirjakansina. 

Lisukkeena kirjasivujen sekaan laitettiin värikkäitä sarjis-sivuja, kierrätettyinä hylätyistä, saman toimintaelokuva-aikakauden sarjakuvista. (Niille, jotka ei ollut niin tykästyneet Tarzaniin tai Mustanaamioon, tarjosin Bambia ja Pocahontasta.)

Paja onnistui hyvin. Oli kiva nähdä,että ihmiset oikeasti nauttivat luomisesta jotain kaunista ja hyödyllistä nostalgisista roska-aarteista.

What happens when you start looking at a non-profit organisation and the customer-facing services it provides, from the customers' point of view?

Well, firstly, you might end up knowing your customers and what drives them a bit better. You might even be able to choose a face for them. Or four.

You might start playing pretend with a stack of banana boxes and a little doll with a wooden pickup truck to simulate the real situation and to find a solution.

You might take the logo and run away with it. But first you think of the most obvious promotional product.

You could find yourself designing logo socks and knitting them up, to represent the main craft workshop run by the organisation.

 

You might start messing about with clay, and end up with chunky ceramic logo necklaces to represent the pottery.

Anothers might catch the same logoing bug, and you might end up having the same idea as the other to make upcycled bedsheet bags with silkscreened, swirling logos to be used in the pop-up shop.

Somebody else might look at the necklaces you made and fancies lightweight logo-shaped earrings. So you go down to the wood workshop and ask them to make a pair. While you are there you ask them to make a whole bunch more of the most obvious promotional product. It could get popular..!

And finally, you might decide to design a visual aid to explain to the unknowing or partially informed customer the whole complicated structure of the non-profit organisation and its different facets in a visual, easily absorbable format.

And this way, you might wind up having assembled a lovely little scene that greets the customer when they come here in their real pick-up truck. Thank you service design for the fresh point of view!

leftovers of the cake party - ylijäämät kakkukekkerit pajasta

There were some leftovers from the cake-themed bookbinding workshop: the decorative spines of old books, as well as a few bookbinding sets.

We made pretty bookmarks out of the spines (as seen in Erica Ekrem's book Bound).

I arranged further one-one-one bookbinding sessions at my workplace until the sets ran out.

Out of too-pretty-to-bin gilded scraps I made tiny books that became earrings and necklaces.

No good stuff should go to waste, as you know.

Kirjansidontapajasta jäi yli muutama materiaalipakkausta sekä vanhojen kirjojen kauniit nimiöt.

Työpaikallani ohjasin kirjansidontaa kunnes kaikki setit loppuivat.

Teimme sitten kirjojen nimiöistä kirjanmerkkejä (idea alkuperäisin Erica Ekremin kirjasta Bound).

Ihan pienistä kullattujen nimiöiden hukkapaloista tein minikokoisia kirjoja joista tuli korviksia ja kaulakoruja.

Hyviä materiaaleja ei laiteta roskikseen, tietty.

Its a piece of cake bookbinding workshop

My first group workshop ever - there was cake and everything.

Well, cake-inspired handbound books, more like.

I instructed 3 people who were new to bookbinding to make scrumptious upcycled books. 

I set up everything like an old fashioned party, with aged white bobbin lace, glass cake stands, lovely old baking tins and handfuls of candy-like beads and such. I did enjoy hunting for the props, just as much as designing the actual bookbinding part.

 

The cake-themed do was a success. I fretted over how many stabbed fingers I might have to apply plasters to - the awl is incredibly sharp and sneaky fast if one is not used to using it - but I had no reason to worry.

Everybody completed their book smiling (and probably quite hungry for actual cake) none with bleeding fingertips.

Next time I might forego such a literal theme though. People just about fit around the table sewing...

Ohjasin eka kertaa ryhmälle kirjansidontaa.

Teemoitin koko juttu kakkukekkeriksi, menin hieman intohimoiseksi rekvisiitan hankimisessa, mutta kirjansidontaohjeetkaan ei kärsineet - kirjoitin ne ihan reseptinä.

Kaikki pajalaiset oli kuitenkin hyvin otettuja ja innoissaan pajn ilmiöstä, ja valmistivat kakkusiivu-näköistä kirjojaan hyvässä ilmapiirissä, ilman tökättyjä sormenpäitä. (Olin vähän huolissani etukäteen, miten tulee sujumaan jos ei olla totuttuja käyttämään naskalia, muttei olisi tarvinnutkaan hermoilla.)

Seuraava kertaa ehkä en kattaa pöytiä niin juhlavasti kirjansidontaa varten - kiva oli, mutta olisihan ollut ehkä pikkasen enemmän työtilaa parempi...

sashiko-stitched knitting needle case - sashikoitu puikkokotelo

I started to try out sashiko-inspired free-style handstitching a whole year ago with a pile of supercolourful fabric scraps and some linen thread. It became one of those stuck in the process wip's that just had to be rethunk to be finished.

So instead a cushion cover, it ended up becoming a knitting needle case.

Vuotta sitten aloitin kokeilemaan sashiko-kirjontaa mutta projekti jäi kesken. Otin esille taas, ja mietin mitä muuta voisi keksiä ylikirjavasta mutta kivasta, monta tuntia käsin tikatusta tekstiilistäni.

Näin tuli hauska sukkapuikko-kotelo keskeneräisestä sashikoidusta tyynynpällisestä.

another learning curve in tutoring - seuraava oppikaarini ohjaajana

This was the second of the two practice teaching sessions, that I organised before my main creative bookbinding workshop exam.

I wrote the instructions, and then decided to make my own book alongside the person I was teaching, to see how others pace differs from mine, as well as how well I can write instructables.

As a result, we ended up with two very cute journals, and I learned a lot again about how to teach my creative skills to others.

Harjoitustuokiona näyttöäni varten vedin taas luovaa kirjansidontaa, yhdelle asiakkalle vain tässäkin kertaa. Tein oman kirjani kirjoitettujen ohjeeni seuraen, samanaikaisesti asiakkaan kanssa rinnakkain - halusin kokea miten muiden tahti eroa omaltani, sekä osaanko selkeästi selittä ohjeissa mitä ja miten tehdään.

Lopputuloksena syntyi kaksi todella söpö päiväkirja. Olen myös oppinut paljon taas muille ohjauksesta.

a first at teaching bookbinding - eka kertaa kirjansidonnan ohjaajana

I organised two teaching occasions, so I could practice instructing the creative bookbinding before my big exam.

During the first occasion, this little book was created, mainly from the ideas of the person I was teaching.

Järjestin kaksi erillistä ohjaustuokiota, jotta voisin harjoitella kirjansidonnan ohjausta näyttöni varten.

Ensimmäisen pajan aikana syntyi tämä pieni kirjanen asiakkaan ideoiden johdosta.

Xmas journals - Jouluinen kirjansidonta

At work I have spent some weeks since September making journals for the upcoming Xmas craft boutique.

I knew I should just plan to make two or three books, because I was also getting started out on my studying journey to become a handicrafts tutor. However, after a rummaging research I ended up on ten must-make journals - the fantastic selection of xmas papers and findings got a firm hold on my imagination. There were about twice as many initial ideas, so I did actually rein it in and stuck to the absolute musts.

From the ten planned, I got eight successful that are going into the Xmas boutique to be sold. The ninth, my own promising design needs to be unpicked and to be done justice to with a thicker linen cord, sometime in the near future. The tenth, a white-and-silver beauty was an unfortunate victim of an inksplash accident.

Töissä olen viettänyt muutaman viikon syyskuusta lähtien tekemällä muistokirjoja tulevaan jouluiseen pajaputiikkin.

Tiesin, että minun pitäisi vain suunnitella kaksi tai kolme kirjaa tehtäväksi, koska minulla alkoi olla kiire saman aikaan alkavien käsityöohjaajaopintojani kanssa. 

Materiaalien kaivelun ja yhteenkeräilyn jälkeen päädyin kymmeneen päiväkirjaan, joiden oli pakko tulla toteutetuksi. Fantastinen valikoima joulupapereita ja -härpäkeitä sai pääni pursumaan ideoista. 

Alkuperäisesti kirjaehdokkaita oli noin kaksi kertaa enemmän, siis oikeasti hillitsin itseäni, pohdin ja karsin listaani vakavasti ja siten päädyin vain kymmeneen.

Kymmenestä suunnitellusta sain kahdeksan onnistunutta yksilöä, jotka ehdottomasti kelpaa esille myyntihyllyyn. Lupaava keksintöni yhdeksäs on tuomittu purettavaksi (tehdään siitä paremman joskus paksummalla pellavalangalla), ja kaunis, valko-hopeinen kymmenes joutui vahingossa musteroiskeen uhriksi.
