forest floor cushions - metsäpohja tyynysetti

Ever since I made the pieces for my Decay Garden, the process has been bubbling away in the back of my mind.

I'm glad I could combine this ongoing artistic process with one of my course assignments. It resulted in a set of cushions, but they are so much more to me than just decorative cushions.

I've pretty much ended up with exactly what I had in mind. The materials came together for it nicely too, partly because I had been collecting for the potential Decay Garden extension, as well as constant luck at the scrap store. I picked up textural fabrics that brings the forest floor to mind, also anything linen.

 

In these pieces I combined my pattern cutting and machine sewing skills with my obsession and love of stitching by hand. I dreamed of textural play in each of the pieces, and I feel I achieved the optimum in both, by two different approaches to fabric manipulation.

Minun Lahopuutarha sai lisäystä.

 

Olen ollut päässäni työstämässä monia Lahopuutarha-prosessiini liittyviä konseptejä. Opintojani kautta tuli nyt tilaisuus toteuttaa pari ideoistani ompelukurssin näytön muodossa. 

 

Suunniittelin Metsäpohja-nimisen tyynysetin. Olen tyytväinen siihen miten paperille heitetystä luonnoksesta sain molemmista ihan arkikäytössäkin toimivia tekstiiliteoksia. Kaikki elementit kuten kankaat ja yksityiskohtien ratkaisut tulivat vastaan vähän kuin tilauksesta - ja se on iso juttu kun meikäläinen metsästää teoksen ainekset aina kierrätettynä. No, olenhan minä keräillyt jo just tälläiset metsämaiset materiaalit, mutta kuitenkin, tekstiilipankki oli nykyään todella antelias ja tarjosi just mitä menin sinne etsimään (esim. toimivanväriset terenauhat, monta metriä edes!).

Hain erityisesti pellavaa, sekä sellaiset kankaat mitkä muistuttaa metsää, lehtoa ja kangasta.

Hyödynsin kaavojen piirto- ja ompelutaitoijani sekä innostukseni käsin ompeluun sai vallan tekstuurien muotoilussa myös. Halusin molemmissa tyynyssä luoda tekstuurien kautta metsien tuntumaa, ja luulen että sain aikaseksi just sellaisen valitsemillani tekstiilimuokkaus-tekniikkoilla.

the allotment as lifestyle - palstaviljely lifestyle:na

I made a mini-collection based on the lifestyle of an allotment gardener. Which I am one myself too.

I was making this collection during the heart of winter, so it was extra nice to work with such summery themes and of course I pulled out all my floral scraps and made sure the frozen January landscapes of my greyscale urban surroundings didn't have a say in how my collection would look like.

I designed a 5-piece collection, of which I succesfully realized a summer hat, a gardening journal and a gardener's tool belt / apron. I would have liked to make a bag that goes on the bike, but that proved to be a bigger job and a longer process that my schedule allowed for, and I tried to make gardening gloves but they didn't work out.

I cant wait for the growing season to start so I could model my collection - I reckon the swing-around apron will be a really useful accessory.

Suunnittelin ja valmistin malliston, inspiraationa oli palstaviljelijän lifestyle. Olen itse palstaviljelijä kesäisin, niin tuntui hyvältä täyttää syvätalven arkkipäiviäni kukkakuoseilla palstapuuhista pohdiskellen.

Mallisto koostuu asusteista ja tarvikkeista, toteutin niistä nämä kolme: hellehattu, puutarhurin työkaluvyö ja puutarhapäiväkirja. Polkupyörän sivulaukut olivat liian haasteelliset toteuttaa näytön aikataulun sisällä. Työhanskat yritin kyllä valmistaa, mutta ne eivät onnistuneet.

Olisi jo puutarhakausi alkannut! Haluan jo testata miten mallistoni käytännössä toimii, erityisesti mun suosikki: tuo puutarhaessu-työkaluvyö. Nähdään palstalla!

armchair slipcover - nojatuolin irtohuppu

I collect vintage linen fabrics and love using them whenever I can, in everyday life as well as sewing projects. Their quality and colours are incredible, and best of all, usually they are available for a fraction of today's textile prices.

I proved my point when I made a washable slipcover for my retro armchair to fulfill a course assignment.

I calculated what I actually spent on the project alongside the potential cost if I wanted to work from brand-new shopbought textiles of a similar quality to the ones I sourced from the thrifts.

The thrifted linen fabrics cost me €13,44. The brand-new equivalent would have been €401,75. 

I also calculated that I would have had ended up with a lot of scrap of that expensive linen because it was a narrow 137cm width, and a particular pattern placement was necessary to make the chair cover.

I really like the new look of my favourite armchair, and cannot but love its thrifty price.

Keräilen muun muassa menneiden aikojen pellavaiset tekstiilit. Niiden laatu ja värimaailma on huippuluokkaa, nykytekstiileistä vaikeasti löytyy samankaltaista. Retrotekstiilien hinta myös on yleensä uusien tekstiilien hinnan musto-osa.

Kun sain kurssitehtäväksi ommella nojaltuolilleni irtopäällisen, tartuin tilaisuuteen käyttää hyväksi muutama sopiva pellavaista retro-aarrettani.

Laskin toteutuneiden kustannuksieni lisäksi mitä olisi maksanut, jos olisin käynyt kaupassa ostamaan samanlaatuista ja -ilmeistä pellavakankaita.

Retrokankaat maksoi €13,44. Vaihtoehtona tekstiilikaupasta uudet pellavakankaat olisi maksaneet €401,75! Laskin myös leikkuusuunnitelman kautta, että kalliista uudesta pellavasta olisi syntynyt paljon hukkapaloja, koska ruutujen kohdistus vaatii tilaa, ja kankaiden leveys oli vain 137cm...

Tykkään nojatuolini uudesta ilmeestä, ja en voi olla tykkäämättä uuden ilmeen hyvää hintaa.

sashiko-stitched knitting needle case - sashikoitu puikkokotelo

I started to try out sashiko-inspired free-style handstitching a whole year ago with a pile of supercolourful fabric scraps and some linen thread. It became one of those stuck in the process wip's that just had to be rethunk to be finished.

So instead a cushion cover, it ended up becoming a knitting needle case.

Vuotta sitten aloitin kokeilemaan sashiko-kirjontaa mutta projekti jäi kesken. Otin esille taas, ja mietin mitä muuta voisi keksiä ylikirjavasta mutta kivasta, monta tuntia käsin tikatusta tekstiilistäni.

Näin tuli hauska sukkapuikko-kotelo keskeneräisestä sashikoidusta tyynynpällisestä.

upcycled wool jacket - tuunausprojektina palaneuletakki

I had a blast upcycling bits of knitted woollen samples, halfway knitting projects and wrongly washed jumpers into this one big hug of a cardigan.

Before I went to attend the day course in Tampere, I collected inspiration and all the materials weeks in advance. The scrap store and the charity shops really spoiled me this time - I loved the potential and the promise of my collected scarpheap.

For the day of the course, the overlocker became my best friend. Together we made the most colourful, most oversized upcycled knitwear I ever did see.

I have already started to collect woolly bits again, in the hope that I could make another pieced garment soon.

I wear this sometimes - it's really warm! I'm not a 100% certain about how the collar turned out - I'm thinking about re-doing it.

Mulla oli niin hauskaa tuunaamassa neulemallitilkkuja, keskeneräisiä neuleprojekteja sekä väärinpestyjä villapuseroita uudeksi vaatekappaleeksi!

Olin kerännyt kaikki inspiraatiotani sekä kaikki materiaalit viikoja ennen kun lähdin Tampereen suuntaan lähiopetuspäivänä. Porin tekstiili- ja materiaalipankista sekä muilta kierrätyspaikkoista löytyi loistavasti soveltuvaa tekstiiliä ja lisukkeita. Olin ihan innoissani kerätyssä tekstiilipinossa piilevistä mahdollisuuksista.

Lähipäviän aikana opiston saumurin kanssa tulimme hyvin toimeen - yhdessä me saimme aikaiseksi maailman överi-ilosimman, yliylisuurimman, kirjavimman villatakin E-V-E-R.

Olen jo keräämässä uutta villaneulepalasia, joista saisi taas värkätty uuden palaneulevaatteen.

Laitan tämä mun eka tuunattu villatakkini päälle kun on tarpeeksi viileä - se on yllättävän lämmin! En kuitenkaan olen vakuuttunut sen kauluksen viimeistelystä, luulen että puren ja korjaan sen paremmaksi joskus.

Decay Garden - eli minun Lahopuutarha

These pieces - Decaying log, Dead tree and Umbilical cord - rose out of feelings relative to human activity in and as part of nature. Nature is perfect in its creations and resolves, it becomes obvious that there is always inbuilt mechanisms, as well as natural circumstantial dynamics to ensure that when the original function ends usefulness still continues.

A tree for example. A tree dies standing in the ground, or falling to the forest floor, it instantly and seamlessly becomes just another part of the forest, by providing a new habitat or source of food. It is still a vital part of the cycle of the living forest, not a problem, not a surplus, nor a waste.

Take a pair of jeans. In general its functionality ends in a hole, a stain, a broken zipper, a new fashion trend. It is now considered dysfunctional, not needed, not wanted. I wondered if it is only down to point of view. If the point of view is shiftable. What makes a weed a weed, and what makes a pest a pest. In nature, they all seem to have their assigned places, no one is excluded. Everything is kept in balance with others but nothing is singled out as bad, or useless. 

With human activity and endeavours, it seems that we often generate waste and problems alongside whatever we make. We label things from our point of view, while considering our own desires and our own purpose, leaving little space in thought for our environment where we exist as part of it. We leave unobserved the needs of our needs that thed'd require to cycle back into nature in a non-problematic way..

Decay Garden with its current three pieces is an ongoing meditation amongst points of view, a wordless non-judgemental textile prayer, a deep-felt wish towards a wholesome change.  I wish that everything we produce would be just like a tree. I wish that everything we produce would belong to a perfect cycle of usefulness in all its stages of existing and then melting into the source without creating issues. 

 

Lahopuutarha - Lahopuu, Kelopuu ja Napanuora

Lahopuutarha nykyisellä kolmella osallaan on omien tunteiden hyväksyminen luontoa ja ihmisluonetta kohtaan, samalla jatkuvaa mietiskelyä näkökulmien kesken, sanaton, tuomitsematon tekstiilirukous ja syvällinen toive kohti terveellistä muutosta.

Luonto on täydellinen luomuksissaan ja ratkaisuissaan. Käy ilmi, että aina on sisäänrakennettuja mekanismeja sekä luonnollisten olosuhteiden dynamiikkaa varmistamaan hyödyllisyyden jatkua, kun alkuperäinen toiminto päättyy.

Esimerkiksi puu. Puu kuolee seisten tai kaatuu metsäpohjaan. Siitä tulee hetkessä ja saumattomasti vain toinen osa metsää tarjoamalla uuden elinympäristön tai ravinnon lähteen. Se on edelleen tärkeä osa elävän metsän kiertokulkua, ei ongelma, ei ylijäämä tai jäte.

Sitten farkut. Yleensä niiden toimivuus päättyy reikään, tahraan, rikkinäiseen vetoketjuun, uuteen muotitrendiin. Nitä pidetään nyt pois joutuvana, hävetettävänä, hävittettävänä.

Mietin, onko se vain näkökulmasta kiinni. Jos näkökulma olisi pehmeämpi, pyöreämpi, taipuisampi, mukautuvampi kuten materiaali on. Mikä tekee jätteestä jätteen, rikkaruohosta rikkaruohon, tuholaisesta tuholaisen. Luonnossa niillä kaikilla näyttää olevan omaa paikkansa, ketään tai mitään ei ole suljettu pois. Kaikki pidetään tasapainossa muiden kanssa, muttei mitään korosteta huonoksi taikka hyödyttömäksi.

Ihminen toiminnallaan ja pyrkimyksillään luo usein ongelmia kaiken tekemisen rinnalla. Merkitsee asioita omasta näkökulmastansa, ottaa huomioon omat toiveensa ja tarkoituksensa, jättäen liian vähän tilaa ajatuksissaan luonnolliselle ympäristöllensä, jossa elää vuorovaikutuksessa osana sitä. Jätämme huomiotta tarpeidemme tarpeet, joiden pitäisi olla jo paikallaan luomusvaiheesa että luomuksimme voi olla osaa luontoa ongelmattomalla tavalla.

Toivon, että kaikki meidän tuottamamme olisi kuin metsän puu. Toivon, että kaikki meidän tuottamamme koko olemassaolonsa aikana kuuluisi täydelliseen hyödyllisyyden kiertokulkuun ja sitten sulaisi takaisin luontoon luomatta ongelmia.

t-shirts as message carriers

I left the t-shirt piece to begin work on to last because I had some internal conflict about the ethics of cutting up a perfectly usable, undamaged clothing item to repurpose. It came from the same black binbag as the broken jeans and scraps, nevertheless it wasn't faulty.

Then I was focusing on why I liked and why I disliked this t-shirt, pretty much in the same time. I liked it becuse it said nature on it. I didn't like it because it was pale custard yellow, and pretentious in its message, I felt. 

There wasn't anything much beautiful in its representation of nature. It wasn't graceful or powerful like nature, it wasn't timeless and classic, like nature never goes out of fashion, does it? This tee was definitely very last century, in its spirit and its disregard for its own message.

It was thin plasticky printed flowers and letters imitating embroidery, perhaps that offended me a bit too, because it was representing handworked embroidery in a cheap way. I still picked this t-shirt out of the binbag, for all these above reasons. I felt it was perfectly fitting for my purpose, for taking part in what I want to say with the textile pieces I am making.

Clue: slogan t-shirts, walking advertisements, statement posts, message carriers.

Conclusion: I find the message of the t-shirt lacking, therefor I alter the t-shirt to remedy the message.

I felt like a darker ‘canvas’ with less holes was needed to express the full circle of ideas in the conversation of this process. The perfect pair was found in a charity shop, again.

At home I came across an outgrown pair of denim shorts from my son, its fabric has become very very soft and quite fragile from the many washes it must have endured (it was a second hand purchase - at least one child wore this before my son). I feel it will make a good canvas for the bird/insect elements, being so soft and malleable.
